What is a personalized licence plate?
A great way to customize your vehicle in Alberta is by getting Personalized Licence Plates, also known as custom or vanity plates. It’s a great present idea for birthdays or Christmas.

When deciding on your vanity plate message, note that Alberta Personalized Licence Plates can have up to seven characters (letters or numbers) for a motor vehicle and up to five characters for a motorcycle, including spaces.
Once you decide what you would like your personalized plate to say (please have a few options in case your first choice is taken!), we will search the database.
Please Note: The Alberta Government reserves the right to reject custom licence plate requests. This usually happens if the message contains words which may be offensive or misunderstood, often due to sexual, political or racial content.
Personalized license plates cannot be issued for Dealer, Antique or Disabled registration class.

- Email us the name(s) you would like your vanity plate to say (with a few variations in case your first choice is taken)
- Your driver’s licence (or scan if you are emailing the request)
- The address where you will like the plate delivered
- Ordering it as a gift? Great idea! We will require YOUR drivers licence but please make sure you tell us if the plate is for someone else. We can have the plate delivered to our office if you want to keep it a surprise – be sure to let us know in advance.
For online service:If you are ordering online, please email us the above requirement(s). Once we receive the above information, we will e-mail you the ‘order confirmation’ to review, sign and return via e-mail to finalize your order – It’s that easy!.
How long does it take to get a personalized licence plate?
A custom licence plate usually takes between 3 to 6 weeks to be delivered.
