Ignition Interlock Program (Application)

WHAT IS the ignition interlock program?

If you have lost your drivers licence due to alcohol-related offenses, you can apply for the Alberta Ignition Interlock Program to gain conditional driving privileges. This program involves the installation of an ignition interlock device in a vehicle. This device measures the alcohol level of the driver and will lock the ignition if the reading is too high.

Participation in the program may be mandatory or voluntary. It is mandatory for drivers who have been convicted of:

  • Having a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) equal or greater than 80 milligrams percent (.08 mg %) for first time offenders.
  • Reinstatement Condition Code 26 or
  • Refusing breath/blood sample or
  • Reinstatement Condition Code 27 or
  • BAC over .08 mg % if the client has one or more prior liquor related offences in the past 10 years.
